Martian Fighting Machine/Tripod design by Hordriss
Martian Fighting Machine/Tripod design
So what does it actually say in the original The War of the Worlds book...

Brazen hood

Hood looks like a cowl (so not as in hood of a car etc.)

Shield like affair – when first seen leaving the pit.

Leg joints – discs, sheaves

No wheels

No fixed pivots

Green puffs of smoke – joints

Mass of machinery

Rolling motion when moving at speed

Articulate head section

Boilers on stilts

Aperture in hood (out of which shreds hang in Dead London)

Distinctly mechanical but able to move organically

Milk stool

Heatray – funnel, camera-like, box, held by tentacles, green smoke

Artistic license fills the gaps and we have this which I did on "Paint" when bored.

Missy's Device MKII by Hordriss
Missy's Device MKII
I took one look at the concept art and said to myself there is no way you can make a faithful replica of that prop and you only get wound up trying... so I didn't.

This is my homage to the original prop made out of an old Star Wars toy, my usual simple Blue Peter/Art Attack methods.

RE enquiries as to me making one for you, yes you, right there, not you, the one behind you (some of you looked)... I made this one as a simple version that people could replicate regardless of skill level, the first one I did I cannot replicate, I used up what bits I had doing the first one plus it was a pain in the arse (ass if you're in the US). I make things because I want them and there aren't commertially available replicas not because I take any enjoyment from the making process so I don't do commissions but am happy to provide "instructions".

"Say something nice".

This is my homage to the original prop made out of household bits and bobs, my usual simple Blue Peter/Art Attack methods. It's actually a dull gunmetal colour but for some reason on camera it looks a sort of grey/blue.

In the words of the Lady hereself... "Say something nice".

I am a magical practitioner and have a couple of staves with narly tops but I must admit they aren't quite what I want so I though sod it, I'll make one.

Real wooden pole. with a real fluorite crystal, the spiral into the point is newspaper and card with PVA + water and loo roll covering it, patiently painted to look like real wood (very Blue Peter but if the ancients could have done it they would have done it).

Full sized replica made by Sevans, predominantly fibreglass, given to me by a friend for whom it wasn't accurate enough. Needs some TLC, first job is to take it over to B&Q to see if they can help me replace the missing handle.
Just posted some more daleks, need to get round to photographing some more new creations.

The next piece I post will be inspired by the fantastic game - Emerald City Confidential (based on OZ books and more so than certain musicals) and by the South Park episode "It hits the fan"

Tantalizing? Of course not but I haven't posted a journal entry in ages.

I studied History and Philosophy and MRes MCC at Keele University, having educated myself beyond the possibility of useful employment I have time for hobbies. I like food, you know proteins carbohydrates etc and occationally a liquid, usually vodka. I love hanging with friends, playing music at insanely loud levels and bouncing off the walls and talking 'till the early hours.

Making things and writing helps me deal with the ambient complexities of life...

Not at all, they're well deserved, I'd love to be able to make one for myself.

Hey! LOVE what you do and want like....everything you've made for myself. I love the clunky, chunky quality of classic Who props, they're so reassuring

Thanks, that's great to hear.

I miss the old style props, no they all look cobbled together out of old phones and such... well the old ones were made out of old crap too but they weren't made to look like they were... if you know what I mean... that sentence started out with a purpose.

I know what you mean, what I love about the classic props is the chunkiness about them, I love the big acrylic buttons and flick switches used on computers and things, not sure why. I wouldn't class it a fetish....

I miss the old TARDIS consoles for the same reason, purpose built as opposed to the sort of higgledy-piggledy look of the new ones.

Hey Hordriss! Welcome to #Doctor-Whovians! I've been a big fan of your props- very nice stuff. Also I'm obligated to ask you to read the submission guidelines if you plan to submit art to the gallery, for all that administrative stuff. And non-obligatorily but hopefully, to have a fun time browsing our gallery of awesome art. Also look forward to the weekly Doctor Who Internet link blogs.

Have a Who-full day and don't let the Daleks exterminate you! :D
